Look up San Francisco in the dictionary and you'd find the words; cool, cultured and chic without being brash. Unlike Los Angeles, San Francisco likes to keep things understated.

From the beautiful architecture, fantastic food and wine and a vibrant cultural scene, San Francisco crams a lot onto its 49 square mile area.

The weather however, can be a bit hit and miss. In the summer a great fog descends on the area and the winters are rather wet and cold, so spring and autumn are probably you best bet. But no matter what the weather, this city has so much to offer both indoors and outside that you will always find something to do.

As you may already know, San Francisco is rather hilly; there are more than 50 hills within the city limits. The trams, locally known as cable cars, are therefore you best bet for getting around town.

The hills and roads themselves have now become landmarks. Lombard Street, which has been used in many a movie, is a pretty, winding one-way street that is used to travel down Russian Hill.

San Francisco oozes style and the architecture is no exception. Russian Hill and the Mission District which has now been gentrified whilst still retaining its Bohemian roots are best places to admire the beautiful 19th century buildings.

For shops, restaurants and entertainment such as Ripley's Believe It Or Not and the National Maritime Museum head to Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39 on the city's waterfront. The local sea lions on Pier 39 have also become famous for their ruckus behavior, but they are rather smelly.

For more shopping, as well as up-market hotels, and some of the best off-Broadway theatres in the USA, head to Union Square; the central hub of the city. Here you can sit and have a coffee and watch the world go by.

The longest suspension bridge in the world when it was completed in 1937, The Golden Gate Bridge may no longer hold that record, but it is now one the most famous landmarks in America and is synonymous with the San Francisco sky line. It is also the most photographed bridge in the world, but you can also get some great pictures of the city by walking across this rust-coloured structure.

'The Rock', the inescapable Alcatraz prison that held the likes of Al Capone and Robert Stroud forms a key part in San Francisco money-grabbing and sometimes shady history and is an interesting break away from the city streets.
